The Winter’s Playlist post sneaked up on me this time. So, we’re going to have some fun. My YA heroine Winter goes to plenty of local concerts — mostly crappy punk shows at the behest of her best friend. However, there is one thing her friend Ryan has positively influenced Winter on: punk rock covers.

These two love hearing poppy punk bands cover just about anything, but particularly songs from the ’50s and ’60s. So, of course, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes dominate their playlists.

Today you’re getting a double dose of music fun, as I give you both their recommendations.

First, Winter goes for Me First’s cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”

Ryan, however, would urge you to enjoy the band’s rendition of — and karaoke video for — “I Believe I Can Fly.” (Yes, really.)

Are you a fan of covers, cheesy or otherwise? Add your favorites in the comments. Though it makes my husband crazy, I get a kick out of hardcore covers of ’80s and ’90s songs. Evergreen Terrace did a full album of covers, aptly called Writer’s Block, including ’90s alt favorites “Zero” and “Plowed.”
